⛴️
Blank sailings, first half of October Maersk, MSC and Hapag-Lloyd are blanking sailings concentrated on Ningbo, Shanghai and Qingdao; South China is less affected
📉
Europe: pre-holiday shortfall Carriers failed to fill ships before the holiday; China-Europe CIF about USD 3,000 per 40HQ. Maersk and CMA CGM announced USD 4,000 from 19 October — implementation uncertain
🇺🇸
Transpacific at 2026 highs US West Coast about $8,500, East Coast about $11,500 per 40ft; GRIs announced for mid-to-late October and about 15% of October sailings blanked
🚢
Suez returns, landside binds COSCO/OOCL restoring Red Sea transits on Europe-Med services; Gemini runs six two-way Suez services. Maersk: terminals and inland links, not vessels, are now the constraint

⚡ What to do now

🎄 Book Christmas ocean now Europe-bound cargo must be ready by mid-October and sail around 21–22 October to land between early December and 10 December
🚂 Keep rail as the fallback China-Europe rail needs about two weeks of booking notice and closes for Christmas at the end of October
⏱️ Buffer US deliveries Rollover runs about 10% at the main Chinese ports; pickup takes about 5 days plus 2–4 days of inland rail — build in 5–7 days
📊
Indicative pricing — confirm at booking

October split the map — Asia and Oceania rose while the Middle East, the Americas and Europe fell. Prices below are indicative — request a firm quote with 2–3 weeks validity before confirming, especially where carriers have announced October increases (Europe from 19 October, the US in mid-to-late October).

🇪🇺 Europe focus
  • Europe base ports at about $3,000–3,300: the 40ft market should hold stable to mid-October, then go flat or lower in the second half. Maersk, MSC and Hapag-Lloyd are blanking sailings in the first half of October, concentrated on Ningbo, Shanghai and Qingdao; South China is less affected.
  • Christmas timing: China to a European base port takes 40–45 days, so Christmas ocean cargo must be ready by mid-October and sail around 21–22 October to land between early December and 10 December. China-Europe rail needs about two weeks of booking notice, with a cut-off at the end of October.
  • Her advice: most Chinese ports allow about 7 days of demurrage free time — watch the CY cut-off and container return, and do not let a late factory push cargo past the 21–22 October sailings.

🌎 North America & Oceania
  • North America: US West Coast about $8,500 and East Coast about $11,500 per 40ft, both 2026 highs, with GRIs announced for mid-to-late October and about 15% of October sailings blanked. The Panama Canal is reducing load factors on East Coast services; rollover runs about 10% at the main Chinese ports, higher to the East Coast. South China→US air general cargo is $6–7/kg, nearly 40% above the off-season.
  • Oceania: BMSB fumigation season is under strict enforcement — wooden packaging and outdoor furniture must be fumigated at origin with an official certificate. Direct space to Sydney, Melbourne and Auckland is tightening after Golden Week; transhipment adds 3–5 days.
  • Her advice: US destination pickup takes about 5 days plus 2–4 days of inland rail — build 5–7 days of buffer into delivery dates. The 140th Canton Fair opens in Guangzhou on 15 October.

What this means for shippers

  • 🇲🇽 Mexico → 40GP $6,570–8,030 (flat). Unchanged on the month — the decision is space and schedule, not price.
  • 🇨🇦 Canada → 40GP $8,640–10,560 (+11.6%). Rising into GRIs announced for mid-to-late October — lock validity now.
  • 🇺🇸 USA → 40GP $7,557–9,237 (+11.6%). Derived from its cluster, not a direct desk quote; the desk reads the West Coast near $8,500 and the East Coast near $11,500 per 40ft. Build 5–7 days of buffer for pickup and inland rail.
  • 🇧🇷 Brazil / 🇦🇷 Argentina → 40GP $5,490–6,710 (−33.0%) / $5,490–6,710 (−33.0%). Real quotes, a third below September. Air is no cheaper: Brazil $10.20/kg, Argentina $11.30/kg. Re-quote any open booking at the new level.
  • 🇨🇱 Chile / 🇨🇴 Colombia / 🇪🇨 Ecuador → 40GP $5,490–6,710 (−16.4%) / $5,490–6,710 (−33.0%) / $5,490–6,710 (−33.0%). All three now price at the same level; Colombia and Ecuador fell further than Chile.
  • 📋 Strategic → A two-speed region: North America firming into October GRIs, South America resetting lower. Lock US and Canada space early; re-quote South American lanes at the new level.

Europe — October 2026

Europe fell −12.8% month-over-month on the 40GP midpoint in October, with 38 destinations lower, 6 flat and only Austria higher. The base ports reset: France, Belgium and the UK $3,150–3,850 (−23.1%), the Netherlands $3,240–3,960 (−20.9%), Germany $3,330–4,070 (−18.7%) and Poland $3,285–4,015 (−23.2%), the largest fall in the region. Italy $3,555–4,345 (−15.1%), Spain $3,420–4,180 (−18.3%). Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia held at $4,147–5,034. Austria rose +51.2% to $5,850–7,150 on a single quote against a falling region. Air eased −2.4% on average. Our Europe desk sees the base-port market at about $3,000–3,300 per 40ft, stable to mid-October, then flat or lower in the second half. Christmas ocean cargo should be ready by mid-October and sail around 21–22 October to land between early December and 10 December.

📈
Europe −12.8%: pre-holiday shortfall

Carriers failed to fill ships before China's National Day holiday, and China-Europe CIF levels slid to about USD 3,000 per 40HQ. Maersk and CMA CGM have announced USD 4,000 per 40HQ from Week 43 (19 October); whether it sticks is uncertain. Blank sailings in the first half of October are concentrated on Ningbo, Shanghai and Qingdao.

Why it moved

  • 📉 Pre-holiday shortfall — as port congestion eased, the loading shortfall became evident; most carriers failed to fill before the holiday, and China-Europe CIF levels averaged about USD 3,000 per 40HQ.
  • 🇵🇱 Poland — 40GP $3,285–4,015 (−23.2%), the steepest fall in Europe.
  • 🇫🇷🇳🇱🇧🇪 Base ports reset — France $3,150–3,850 (−23.1%), the Netherlands $3,240–3,960 (−20.9%), Belgium $3,150–3,850 (−23.1%); the UK $3,150–3,850 (−23.1%).
  • 🇩🇪 Germany / 🇦🇹 Austria — Germany $3,330–4,070 (−18.7%); Austria $5,850–7,150 (+51.2%) on a single quote against a falling region — treat it as a lane quote, not a trend.
  • ⛴️ Blank sailings — Maersk, MSC and Hapag-Lloyd are blanking sailings in the first half of October, concentrated on Ningbo, Shanghai and Qingdao; South China is less affected.
  • 🚢 Suez returning — COSCO and OOCL have been restoring Red Sea transits on Europe-Med services since mid-September, and Gemini (Maersk/Hapag-Lloyd) has expanded to six two-way Suez services; the Premier Alliance is the only major alliance not yet back.

What this means for shippers

  • 🇵🇱 Poland → 40GP $3,285–4,015 (−23.2%). The steepest fall in Europe — quote now and fix validity before the 19 October increase is tested.
  • 🚢 Base ports (FR/NL/BE) → France $3,150–3,850 (−23.1%) / Netherlands $3,240–3,960 (−20.9%) / Belgium $3,150–3,850 (−23.1%). In line with the desk's base-port read of about $3,000–3,300 per 40ft: stable to mid-October, then flat or lower.
  • 🇩🇪 Germany → 40GP $3,330–4,070 (−18.7%). Ship from South China where you can — the first-half blank sailings hit Ningbo, Shanghai and Qingdao hardest.
  • 🎄 Christmas timing → ready mid-October, sail about 21–22 October. China to a European base port takes 40–45 days; those sailings land between early December and 10 December.
  • 🚂 Rail option → 40GP $4,608–5,632 to $7,470–9,130, unchanged. About two weeks of booking notice; the China-Europe rail cut-off for Christmas is the end of October.
  • 📅 Strategic → Rates are soft, the calendar is not. Most Chinese ports allow about 7 days of demurrage free time — watch the CY cut-off and container return, and do not miss the 21–22 October sailings.

The South Asia cluster rose +33.1%: India $3,353–4,098, Pakistan $3,595–4,396, Bangladesh $2,970–3,630. India and Pakistan arrived with 40GP priced the same as 20GP for the third month, so their 40GP is extrapolated and +33.1% is our figure, not a quote. Indonesia $1,440–1,760 (+23.1%), Malaysia $1,350–1,650 (+15.4%), China, South Korea and Taiwan $582–696 (+14.1%), Japan $585–715 (+14.0%) and Vietnam $675–825 (+7.1%) also rose. Sri Lanka ($3,420–4,180), Singapore ($585–715) and Central Asia held flat.

🌏
Asia rises, off a low base — Thailand +167.4% and the Philippines +117.4% rebound from unusually low September levels; at $1,035–1,265 and $450–550 on 40GP, a small dollar move is a large percentage. India and Pakistan (+33.1%) are extrapolated, not quoted. Read the levels, not the deltas.

Why it moved

  • 🇵🇰 Pakistan +33.1% — 40GP $3,595–4,396; extrapolated, because the quote arrived with 40GP equal to 20GP for the third month.
  • 🇮🇳 India +33.1% — 40GP $3,353–4,098; the same extrapolation applies. Air eased to $4.60/kg (−8.0%).
  • 🚂 Central Asia rail flat — Kazakhstan $4,031–4,928 and Uzbekistan $4,608–5,632 on 40GP rail, both unchanged.
  • 🇹🇭 Thailand / 🇵🇭 Philippines — 40GP $1,035–1,265 (+167.4%) / $450–550 (+117.4%), rebounding from unusually low September levels.
  • 🀄 East Asia firms — China, South Korea and Taiwan $582–696 (+14.1%); Japan $585–715 (+14.0%); Hong Kong $628–767 (+14.0%).
  • ✈️ Air flat — Asia air averaged flat; Vietnam $1.20/kg (−14.3%), Bangladesh $1.40/kg (−22.2%).

What this means for shippers

  • 🇵🇰 Pakistan → 40GP $3,595–4,396 (+33.1%). An extrapolated figure — get a firm 40GP quote before committing.
  • 🇮🇳 India → 40GP $3,353–4,098 (+33.1%). Same caveat: the desk quote priced 40GP like 20GP, so ask for both sizes.
  • 🇹🇭 Thailand / 🇱🇰 Sri Lanka → 40GP $1,035–1,265 (+167.4%) / $3,420–4,180 (flat). Thailand rebounded from an unusually low September; Sri Lanka was unchanged.
  • 🇮🇩 Indonesia → 40GP $1,440–1,760 (+23.1%). Up with the rest of South-East Asia — book while validity holds.
  • 🀄 East Asia (CN/KR/JP/TW) → China $582–696 (+14.1%) / South Korea $582–696 (+14.1%) / Japan $585–715 (+14.0%) / Taiwan $582–696 (+14.1%). Low absolute levels: the percentage overstates the dollar move.
  • 🚂 Central Asia rail → Kazakhstan $4,031–4,928 / Uzbekistan $4,608–5,632, unchanged. A steady overland option.

Frequently Asked Questions

October's global 40GP average moved +0.2% and the median was flat, but that headline averages opposite moves: 65 destinations rose, 85 fell and 46 were flat. Asia rose +23.9% (Thailand +167.4% and the Philippines +117.4% off unusually low September levels) and Oceania +11.6%; the Middle East fell −14.9%, the Americas −12.9% and Europe −12.8%. Brazil, Argentina, Colombia and Ecuador fell −33.0% to $5,490–6,710 on real quotes, while Canada and the US rose +11.6%. In Europe, carriers failed to fill ships before China's National Day holiday and China-Europe CIF levels slid to about USD 3,000 per 40HQ.
Up: Thailand $1,035–1,265 (+167.4%) and the Philippines $450–550 (+117.4%), both from unusually low September levels; Austria $5,850–7,150 (+51.2%) on a single quote; India $3,353–4,098 and Pakistan $3,595–4,396 (+33.1%), extrapolated; South Africa $4,275–5,225 (+26.7%); Canada and the US (+11.6%). Down: Brazil, Argentina, Colombia and Ecuador $5,490–6,710 (−33.0%); Peru and Bolivia $4,068–4,988 (−30.0%); Poland $3,285–4,015 (−23.2%); France, Belgium and the UK $3,150–3,850 (−23.1%); Saudi Arabia $9,450–11,550 (−18.9%). Kuwait fell −7.1% to $10,800–13,200 on a real quote.
COSCO and OOCL have been restoring Red Sea transits on Europe-Mediterranean services since mid-September, and the Gemini network (Maersk/Hapag-Lloyd) has expanded to six two-way Suez services. The Premier Alliance is the only major alliance not yet back. Maersk says landside bottlenecks — terminals and inland links — rather than vessel capacity are now the constraint. Validate routing and transit time on each booking.
For Europe, ocean cargo should be ready by mid-October and sail around 21–22 October; with 40–45 days from China to a European base port, that lands between early December and 10 December. China-Europe rail needs about two weeks of booking notice, with a cut-off at the end of October. For the US, build 5–7 days of buffer: destination pickup takes about 5 days plus 2–4 days of inland rail. The 140th Canton Fair opens in Guangzhou on 15 October. The EU’s flat €3 customs duty on consignments up to €150 still applies and does not move with freight rates.
Broadly no — air was close to flat, −0.4% on average. Oceania rose +14.9% and the Americas +4.0%, while the Middle East fell −10.7%, Africa −3.4% and Europe −2.4%; Asia was flat. The exception is the transpacific: our desk quotes South China→US general cargo at $6–7/kg, nearly 40% above the off-season.
On Europe, rates are soft — about $3,000–3,300 per 40ft at the base ports, stable to mid-October then flat or lower — but Maersk and CMA CGM have announced USD 4,000 per 40HQ from 19 October, and blank sailings are concentrated on Ningbo, Shanghai and Qingdao. For Christmas cargo the calendar matters more than the rate: book now for the 21–22 October sailings. To the US, rates are at 2026 highs with GRIs announced for mid-to-late October and rollover around 10%, so nothing in the data argues for waiting.
FCL captured this month's declines: Brazil, Argentina, Colombia and Ecuador (−33.0%), the Middle East (−14.9%) and Europe (−12.8%) are cheaper per container than in September. LCL per-CBM indicators were unchanged on 160 of 196 destinations, so on lanes where the container rate rose — Asia (+23.9%) and Oceania (+11.6%) — LCL shields small shipments from the increase. Mode choice still depends on urgency and shipment size; on the US lanes, space and rollover risk matter as much as price.
Pre‑validate HS codes and provide full product specs/tests. For West Africa, secure COC/SONCAP and clear paperwork to minimize inspection risk. For China Reg 150 items, stricter checks remain — allow extra lead time, and remember most Chinese ports allow about 7 days of demurrage free time, so watch the CY cut-off and container return. For Australia and New Zealand, BMSB season means wooden packaging and outdoor furniture must be fumigated at origin with an official certificate.

Ship with confidence.
