The give-back we flagged last cycle arrived on schedule and larger than billed. 139 destinations fell against 29 that rose, and the average lane gave back 7.5%. Europe led it: China → Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and the United Kingdom all printed $4,095-$5,005 for a 40GP, down 19.5%, with France further out at $4,005-$4,895, down 21.2%. Read against the 1 July peak-season surcharge round rather than against July alone, roughly half to four-fifths of that lift is now back out — but only Germany has fallen below its June base. The rest of North Europe still sits 7-10% above where it started the summer, and Poland 20% above. This is a surcharge lapsing, not a market breaking.

Air is the more interesting read, because it stopped behaving as one market. Into Europe the fall was steeper than ocean: Italy −43.8% to $4.10/kg, the Netherlands −39.7%, Norway −37.8%, the United Kingdom and Switzerland −32.9%. Across the LATAM Atlantic it went the other way — Brazil +24.0% to $12.40/kg, Argentina +12.7%, Chile +17.3%. Our desks read the European move as price rather than capacity: rates came down, space did not fully open, and consignments above 10,000 kg — fashion and module cargo in particular — are still being split or rolled to sea on some routes. A soft per-kilo number on a lane you cannot actually book is not a saving.

The Asian easing deepened as forecast: India −42.6% to $1,575-$1,925, the sharpest single fall this snapshot, with Singapore −33.3%, Vietnam −27.3% and Indonesia −25.1%. The Gulf did not participate — China → Saudi Arabia held its 40GP at $6,615-$8,085 for a second consecutive print. Its air rate resolved to $6.90/kg, a level the raw desk data had carried for three straight months while our own threshold rule kept suppressing it; the rule now requires a reading to be new, not merely large, before it neutralises. One non-rate variable belongs in every European landed-cost model this month: the EU's temporary flat €3 customs duty on consignments up to €150 took effect 1 July, is charged to the seller or importer rather than collected at the door, and does not move with freight.

  • Europe's unwind is most of the way through the July surcharge base but has not cleared it. Whether September stops at par or undercuts June is the difference between a lapsed surcharge and softening demand.
  • Air capacity, not air price, is the European constraint. If bookings above 10,000 kg clear without splitting next cycle, the space side has finally caught up with the rate side.
  • The LATAM Pacific needs one clean month. Chile, Colombia and Ecuador printed structurally valid quotes for the first time since June, so their next print reads as a level rather than a rebound.
  • Saudi Arabia's air step to $6.90/kg is three raw prints old but only one published print old. A fourth reading separates a structural Gulf premium from a routing artefact.
