Hungary is forecasted by many to become a major hub for logistics concerning China-Europe trade.

Large infrastructure projects currently being built or planned attest to this future strategic importance of Hungary.

The following article takes a closer look at the strategic importance of Hungary to future trade and its potential to be a logistic hub for trade between Asia and Europe. We examine these future projects and the changes they will bring to this trade.

The China-Hungary Trade

In recent years, trade between China and Hungary has been developing well. China is Hungary’s third largest trading partner excepting other EU countries and for China, Hungary is a strong partner within the group of Central and Eastern European countries behind only Poland and the Czech Republic.

The trade between China and Hungary is primarily machinery goods which form around 60% of Chinese exports to Hungary and a little over half the total value of imported goods.

Chemical goods are another key import from China to Hungary.

Hungary also exports plastic goods, woods and machinery goods to China.

Imports from China have been growing incredibly strongly in recent years, racking up double-digit growth for three consecutive years.

On the other hand export growth is not as strong, but still remains positive, with exports continuing to post growth in 2020 even during the pandemic, in goods such as machinery.

How much does it cost to ship from China to Hungary?

We know that the priority for all businesses when it comes to shipping is knowing the price. If you can find the right plan for your needs, then you might be able to make this work for you.

Price depends on a variety of factors. Let’s take a look at them.

Size and Weight of your parcel.

Of course the larger and heavier your parcel is, the higher the price will be. However, plan smartly and you will be able to take advantage of discounts.

We can help match you with services that specialise in handling small or large parcels and find the strategy that works best for you and your company’s needs.

We’ll help match you with the best service that offers you the best value for money according to the size of parcels you are shipping.

If you are delivering a light parcel (e.g. less than 2 kilos including the package) and you want to do it quickly from China to Hungary, then there are custom shipping strategies that can work for you. Please get in contact with us to discuss these.

Below is our rough costs for different weights of goods being shipped:

  • Up to 500g, the shipping cost from China to Hungary is ¥99 (approximately US$14,50).
  • Up to 1kg, the shipping price from China to Hungary is ¥149 (approximately US$21,80).
  • Up to 1,5kg, the shipping costs from China to Hungary are ¥199 (approximately US$29,10).
Up to 2kg, the shipping from China to Hungary costs ¥249 (approximately US$36,40).

The time it takes to deliver

Time means different things to different businesses.

Some companies need their goods delivered as quickly as possible or according to a tight schedule. Other companies can afford to have a more open schedule when it comes to delivering.

Time, as they say, is money and while of course choosing the quickest option is likely going to cost more in terms of shipping price, if your company has a reputation for quick service that you wish to keep, then spending extra for shipping makes economic sense.

If on the other hand, you have regular turnovers of goods, you may be able to schedule a shipping process that is slower and more cost effective and can arrive in time to replenish your stock.

The product you want to ship.

Please check the rules that your courier company set for what can and can’t be delivered.

Not everything can be delivered and both in-house courier rules as well as country shipping laws apply.

Items such as arms, alcohol, drugs or batteries may be restricted.

If you are in doubt then make sure to check as it’s better to be safe than sorry

Are there prohibited items I can’t ship from China to Hungary?

When it comes to prohibited items you need to consider both the rules of the shipping company and the laws of the countries your goods will be travelling through, especially the ports of departure and arrival.

Some of the most commonly prohibited goods for shipping include arms, drugs, cigarettes, alcohol and batteries.

Remember, if you are in doubt about whether your package is safe or legal to ship, then make sure you consult with one of our expert staff.

It will cost a lot of money in the long run if you organise a shipping strategy only to find out that the item you want to ship is prohibited.

Do not try to subvert the rules as all parcels are scanned before shipping and if you are found to be trying to ship prohibited items, the package will be returned to you at your own expense.

Similarly, there are also rules regarding the size of your parcel. Below are some of these rules:

  • The longest side shouldn’t exceed 60 cm.
  • The sum of all the sides’ length shouldn’t exceed 90cm.
  • The weight of the parcel shouldn’t exceed 2 kilos (2000 grams) in total, with labels and packaging included.
